Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP)

LSAMP Increases the number of students completing STEM degrees, increases the number of students matriculating into graduate programs


Eligibility:  African American, Hispanic, Native American, Pacific Islander; STEM major 
 

Funding:  National Science Foundation, the consortium comprises 7 institutions: Syracuse University (lead institution) and Clarkson University, Cornell University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Monroe and Onondaga Community College

Salwa Omar

Salwa Omar is a junior studying Mechanical Engineering at Clarkson University. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, she currently resides in Brooklyn, NY. This past  summer, she advanced her research on soft robotics applied to hand prosthetics, focusing on developing a silicone-based prosthetic that is fully sensorized and autonomous, operating without EEG or EMG inputs. Under the guidance of Dr. Kevin Fite at Clarkson University, Salwa aims to pursue a Master’s degree in Robotics. 


Beyond research, she is active on campus as president of the FIRST Robotics floor and Structures Subteam Lead on the Rocketry SPEED Team.
 

She also participates in the Dance Ensemble, Clarkson Union Board, and GSA. Salwa enjoys art, skating, crocheting, music, and fashion in her free time.

Essence Raymo

Essence Raymo is a senior Computer Science major from Alexandria, Louisiana.
This summer, she is conducting research under Dr. Michael Bazzocchi on two projects: The Biomechanical Analysis of LSVT BIG Exercises for Parkinson's Disease Rehabilitation and Biomechanical Simulation of Microgravity Exercises. 
Essence plans to pursue a Master's in Computer Science with a focus on Machine Learning at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Outside of academics, she enjoys gaming and reading.

Crystal Boahen

Crystal Ethel Boahen is from Accra, Ghana, and was born in the Bronx before moving to Ghana with her mother.
She is a rising sophomore majoring in Biology and minoring in Medicine and Health Care. Crystal's research, under Dr. Kathleen Kavanagh, focuses on mentoring high school students to build their confidence in pursuing STEM healthcare fields. Her goal is to inspire these students to serve their communities as healthcare advisors.
Crystal plans to attend medical school and also pursue a Master's in Sociology, with her dream school being the University of Pennsylvania and her ideal medical school Johns Hopkins.
She is involved in the Doctors Without Borders and Basketball clubs and enjoys Greek and Egyptian mythology, dancing, and reading. Crystal is an open person and a great listener.
