Research Interests

Research focuses on the fate, transport, and vectoring of microbial and chemical stressors in the environment, including risks associated with exposure to microbial agents in air, water, soils, and produce grown for human consumption. More recent research also addresses economic and environmental tradeoffs of new environmental technology developments.

Technology development includes macroalgae cultivation as an alternative for nutrient bioextraction from wastewater treatment plant ocean outfalls, and through collaborations, algal product development as ruminant livestock feeds to reduce methane enteric emissions, biosensors for pathogen detection and measuring oxidative stress in antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, small-scale anaerobic digester development, electrical discharge plasma reactors for sterilization of liquid foods, and bipolar membrane electrodialysis for recovery of high-purity nutrients from wastewater sludge.
