Prashant Athavale Receives Tenure and Promotion to Associate Professor at Clarkson University
Clarkson University has announced that Prashant Athavale has been granted tenure and promoted from assistant professor to associate professor of mathematics in the Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering.
Since joining Clarkson in 2018, Athavale has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to research, teaching, and service. His interdisciplinary scholarship spans mathematical image processing, materials science, biomedical imaging, machine learning, and data-driven STEM education. He is the lead inventor on two patents, including a recently filed AI-guided denoising algorithm developed in collaboration with Clarkson students. His research has been supported by external funding from prestigious agencies such as the National Security Agency and the Department of Commerce.
Athavale has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and mentored both undergraduate and graduate students. Many of these students have presented their work at top-tier conferences and secured competitive internships and graduate placements at leading institutions and federal programs.
In the classroom, Athavale has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, including Calculus, Differential Equations, Probability and Statistics, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Real Analysis, and Computer Vision. With over 1,200 students taught at Clarkson, his impact on student learning has been significant. His teaching excellence has been recognized with honors such as the Professor Joel Dean Award for Excellence in Teaching from Johns Hopkins University and the Frederick V. Atkinson Award from the University of Toronto.
Athavale’s service contributions extend beyond the classroom and research. He has chaired the departmental colloquium committee, spoken at outreach events such as Science Café talks, and served on dissertation committees across departments and institutions.
