Clarkson University Annual Hopke Distinguished Lecture to be Held Thursday, Oct. 12
Drew Story, Managing Director with the MIT Policy Lab, will present the 2023 Hopke Distinguished Lecture on Thursday, October 12 at 12:15 p.m. in B.H. Snell 213 on the Clarkson Collins Hill Campus, with a reception to follow.
The title of his talk is "Leveraging Academic Research and Expertise for Environmental Policy.” This event is open to the public both in-person and via Zoom.
Story is the Managing Director of MIT's Policy Lab. In this role he guides MIT faculty through strategic policy engagement to increase the impact of their work. As a result, MIT researchers establish themselves as resource
s and advisors to policymakers, and they develop insight into improved research design for producing scholarship with greater potential for societal impact.
While earning his PhD in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at University of California, Riverside, Story spearheaded the creation of the Designated Emphasis in Public Policy, an interdisciplinary specialization to complement a student’s doctoral studies. He also served as an advisor to the California Natural Resources Agency and was selected as a “science translator” by the California Council on Science & Technology.
Story’s previous service includes an appointment to the editorial board of the Journal of Science Policy & Governance and election as Co-Chair of the 2017 Environmental Nanotechnology Gordon Research Seminar. Story is formally trained as a high school science teacher, having been honored as Student Teacher of the Year during completion of his BS in Physical Sciences Education from LeTourneau University.
The Hopke Lecture is supported by the Philip K. and Eleanor F. Hopke Endowment for the Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE). Philip and Eleanor Hopke have been contributors to the Clarkson community since 1989. The goal of the Hopke Lecture series is to continue the tradition of Dr. Hopke’s career of making significant technical contributions to the fields of air quality, aerosol science, and atmospheric chemistry, and also using scientific and technical knowledge to guide public policy decisions at the highest levels of government. In honor of Professor Hopke's work, the annual Hopke Lecture features distinguished researchers who have made significant contributions to our understanding of the environment and have used this scientific understanding to guide policy. The Hopke Lecture series intends to stimulate interest in environmental research and motivate the participation of scientists in public policy.
