Clarkson University’s Alexis Maciel Receives Outstanding Advisor Award For Third Time

Clarkson University’s Associate Professor of Computer Science Alexis Maciel has received the Outstanding Advisor Award for 2023.

Maciel, who previously received the award in 2009 and 2020, was chosen for the honor by students via advisor evaluation results from the previous fall and spring semesters.

"It's truly an honor to receive the advising award again, especially since it's based on student feedback. I find it incredibly rewarding to help guide students through their studies, and to get to know them,” Maciel said.

Outstanding faculty advisors of undergraduate students have been recognized with the Outstanding Advisor Award since 1979.

Maciel teaches courses on software development, algorithms and data structures, and the theory of computation. His research interests are mostly in the area of computational complexity, especially proof complexity and circuit complexity. He is also currently the Interim Chair of the Department of Computer Science.

His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the FRQNT (formerly FCAR), a Québec governmental agency that supports research and new generations of researchers in natural sciences and engineering.

A native of Montréal, Maciel received his Ph.D. in computer science from McGill University. He joined Clarkson in 1997 after postdoctoral appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he was also affiliated with the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies.
