This course is an introduction to the design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) analysis process. Topics include an overview of the process, team selection, component and assembly analysis, and the resulting action items from the analysis. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of the components and assembly steps to highlight the importance of the group discussion. There are many variations to this process, but the concept of the process is the same: it is a critical analysis of a design with a focus on manufacturing and assembly.

As a participant, you will:

  • Coordinate and facilitate the DFMA process.
  • Apply experience and knowledge of manufacturing and assembly processes to analyze a design.
  • Develop a list of action items to investigate for design improvements.

Jeff has enjoyed a 25-year career in Manufacturing Engineering. He received his bachelor’s degrees in electrical and mechanical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. Over the past decade, he has been the manager for Manufacturing Engineering and Technical Documentation at The Gleason Works in Rochester, NY, mainly focused on improving engineering processes and machine assembly efficiency through improved processes, tools, and instructions. He has also led new product introduction and technology transfer projects in their plants in Rochester, Germany, and India.

Prior to his time with Gleason, he spent a few years as a Project Engineer for a custom sheet metal manufacturer, and as a Quality Engineer for a precision machining company. He got his first experience with Manufacturing Engineering working at a light construction equipment manufacturer while he was a machinist and CNC programmer between college semesters. After graduation, he transitioned into the Manufacturing Engineering role, responsible for new product implementation into manufacturing and assembly, and supporting existing product lines. While growing up, he was always tinkering with dirt bikes, snowmobiles, and other machinery, so the hands-on nature of Manufacturing Engineering seemed like a natural career path for him.

In his time away from work, he is an avid golfer and hunter, and he has been restoring a 125+ year-old farmhouse for the past several years.
