Alan Bowman

Professor, Operations & Information Systems
Alan Bowman Headshot

Biography

I am Professor and Associate Dean of the Graduate Business Programs at the Clarkson University School of Business. I have been with Union College / Union Graduate College / Clarkson University since 1990. Prior to that, I worked as an Industrial Engineer for Reynolds Aluminum and as an internal management consultant for the Salt River Project, an electric and water utility located in Arizona. I received a B. S. in Industrial Engineering and an MBA from Arizona State University and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Cornell University.

I have published many articles in journals such as Operations Research, Management Science, Journal of Quality Technology, and Simulation. I have also engaged in numerous consulting activities, including developing computer simulations of business operations to facilitate process improvements, providing six sigma training and project advising, statistical analysis of costs and their drivers in both the electric utility and the heath care industries, and call center scheduling.

My primary areas of expertise are: Operations Management, Management Science, Probability and Statistics, Computer Simulation, Six Sigma and Total Quality Management, Inventory Management, and Scheduling.

I have been married since 1987 and have four grown children - two sons and two daughters. My main hobbies are long distance running, reading books (favorite genre - historical fiction), and listening to music (favorite genre - folk rock). I have run over 40 marathons, multiple 50-mile races, one 72-mile race, and one 12-hour race that went from 7 pm to 7 am. I saw the sun both set and rise and smelled doughnuts cooking in the wee hours of the morning!
